CHOOSING A MISSION BOARD

Choosing a mission board is a significant decision. It reflects a missionary’s doctrinal position, affects outreach, and influences finances. A good mission board will alleviate unnecessary frustrations before and after the missionary arrives on the field, so the missionary’s focus can remain on the ministry.

WHY USE A MISSION BOARD?

• A mission board helps those called to missions to be more adequately prepared for the realities of the mission field by providing practical training and mentoring geared specifically to foreign missions.

• A mission board can supply useful contacts, advisors, and opportunities during deputation and while the missionary is on a foreign field.

• A mission board takes care of administrative services for the missionary, so the local church is at liberty to serve their community while at the same time taking part in missions through the sending and funding of missionaries.

• A mission board allows people with specialized skills not normally present in every sending church to handle business and diplomatic affairs on behalf of the missionaries.

WHEN CHOOSING A MISSION BOARD, CONSIDER:

• Unity of distinctive – do you agree doctrinally?

• Unity of intent – does the mission board agree with your purpose for serving?

• Financial policy – do you agree with the mission board’s method for funding?

• Administrative policy – will it allow you freedom to minister as God leads?

• Separation – does it adhere to the same standards as yours?

All of these criteria should be considered before you choose a mission board. Prayer, investigation, careful consideration, and more prayer will help you choose a board that will fully assist you in reaching your ministry goals for the glory of God.
